South Bohemian Gallery is the only art museum in the South Bohemian Region and one of the five largest institutions of its kind in the Czech Republic. It preserves works of art from the 13th century to contemporary works and its collection ranks among the most important Czech institutions. It has been in operation since 1953 and bears the name of the famous South Bohemian native, painter and illustrator Mikoláš Aleš. The gallery's headquarters are located in the Castle Riding Hall, which is part of the Hluboká nad Vltavou Castle and serves for the presentation of regular attractive exhibition projects. The AJG is also located in the branches of the Wortner House in České Budějovice and the International Museum of Ceramics in Bechyně.

Visitors can choose from a wide selection of professional and popular exhibitions, presenting their own collections and projects created in cooperation with external curators and other gallery and private entities. In addition to exhibitions, the AJG organises a number of accompanying programmes in its premises - guided tours, workshops, lectures, concerts, theatre performances and film screenings.

The permanent exhibition of the South Bohemian Gallery at the Wortner House in České Budějovice presents a selection from the gallery's rich collections. On the underground floor, medieval works are exhibited in spaces evoking a sacred environment. The first floor is dedicated to art associated with South Bohemia, the interwar avant-garde and Czech post-war art. This part of the exposition continues the spiritual themes of medieval art. The landscapes on display evoke the atmosphere of the locations from which the medieval works originated, while the abstract compositions relate to spirituality and spirituality in general. There are also works bearing Christian symbolism such as the cross or the circle. There is also a space for drawings and prints, which allows for their regular renewal.

Tereza Pražáková Kabůrková | Sky on the Table
March 6 – May 31, 2026
Curators | Alžběta Kočvarová, Katarína Uhlířová

Tereza Pražáková Kabůrková is a photographer of everyday life. We find nothing exotic in her photos. How could we? The photos she creates—not only through photography—present us with familiar motifs: the horizons of landscapes and tables, the mass of clouds and flowers, a scythe, a gate, and a ruler. Everything we see as viewers is just too ordinary—a Sunday or perhaps a Wednesday.
The artist does not focus on the spectacle that the contemporary world constantly presents to us. This is not a superficial attempt to enchant the viewer. Nor are these images flashing by at the speed of light - or at least at the speed of TikTok. Here, if we blink, the glass is still on the table, just as it was the last time we filled it with water, put on a sweater that’s a bit itchy, and sat down. Encountering simple reality becomes the unusual experience here.
